Restoring Half Your Smile: Is a Single Arch Dental Implant Right for Your Upper or Lower Teeth?
When several teeth are failing, replacing them one by one isn’t always the best solution. Find out when restoring an entire upper or lower arch may give you a stronger, more stable smile.

Maybe your upper teeth are giving you constant trouble, but your lower teeth are still healthy and strong. Or perhaps years of dental problems have left one row of teeth beyond repair while the other remains perfectly functional.

The good news is that you don’t necessarily need to replace your entire smile.

At St. Tammany Periodontics & Implants, we offer full-arch dental implant solutions for patients who need to replace all of the teeth in their upper or lower jaw.

Sometimes called a single-arch restoration, this approach allows us to rebuild the part of your smile that needs help while preserving healthy teeth whenever possible.

When replacing a few teeth makes more sense

The first thing you should know is that we never replace healthy teeth unnecessarily.

If most of the teeth in an arch remain healthy and stable, we may recommend treating problem areas individually. Depending on your needs, dental implants can replace one missing tooth or several teeth while allowing you to keep the healthy natural teeth around them.

This approach often makes sense when tooth loss is limited and your remaining teeth have healthy gums, adequate bone support, and a good long-term outlook.

But sometimes, looking at each tooth individually misses the bigger picture.

When it may be time to consider the whole arch

If you have only a handful of healthy teeth left in your upper jaw, you could continue treating each failing tooth as another problem develops.

But after repeated procedures, ongoing periodontal problems, and multiple missing teeth, that piecemeal approach may no longer give you the stable, functional smile you desire and need.

A single-arch restoration may make more sense if you have:

  • Multiple missing or severely compromised teeth in one arch
  • Advanced periodontal disease that has weakened the support around many teeth
  • Significant bone loss
  • A removable denture that slips, rubs, or makes eating difficult
  • Remaining teeth with a poor long-term prognosis
  • A history of repeated dental work that hasn’t created lasting stability

The decision isn’t simply about how many teeth you’ve lost. We also consider the health and prognosis of the teeth you still have.

What does a single-arch replacement involve?

Instead of placing an individual implant for every missing tooth, we strategically place several dental implants into your jaw to support an entire row of replacement teeth.

At St. Tammany Periodontics & Implants, our Teeth In A Day approach typically uses four to six implants to anchor a full-arch prosthesis.

Think of those implants as strong new foundations. Once secured in your jaw, they provide stability for your new upper or lower teeth so you can speak, smile, and eat with greater confidence.

Your treatment begins with a detailed evaluation. We assess your remaining teeth, gums, jawbone, bite, and overall oral health to determine whether saving individual teeth or replacing the full arch offers the better long-term solution.

If you need removal and replacement of failing teeth or preparatory treatment such as bone grafting or a sinus lift, we incorporate those steps into your personalized treatment plan.

Why replace only one arch?

If the teeth in your opposite arch are healthy, there’s no reason to replace them simply for the sake of symmetry. Restoring only the affected arch allows you to keep your healthy natural teeth while addressing widespread problems where they exist.

But your upper and lower teeth still have to work together. That’s why careful planning matters.

Your new teeth must fit comfortably against the opposing arch and create a balanced bite. Our team considers not only how your new smile will look, but also how it will function when you chew, speak, and go about everyday life.

How do you know which approach is right for you?

There isn’t a magic number of failing teeth that automatically means you need a full-arch solution.

For one person, preserving several natural teeth may offer an excellent long-term outcome. For another, repeatedly treating compromised teeth may simply delay the inevitable while adding expense, frustration, and more dental procedures.

At St. Tammany Periodontics & Implants, our board-certified periodontists evaluate the health of your entire mouth before recommending a solution. We use advanced technology, including 3D imaging and digital impressions, to carefully plan implant placement and determine the approach that gives you the best foundation for long-term oral health.

If one half of your smile is failing, you may not need to start over completely.
